How many calories are in a typical Indian restaurant meal? 836 dishes, estimated

The median food dish on eleven Jaipur menus is 462 kcal by our estimate; a main and a side land near 900. The spread, the heaviest plates, the lightest, and what each kitchen's typical dish weighs, from 836 dishes on 18 October 2026.

By Vidit Jain and Milind Raj, foundersOur estimate

Search for the calories in restaurant food and you get generic tables for "butter chicken" or "dal makhani" with numbers copied from one site to the next. Restaurant menus in India almost never carry calories, so nobody can answer for the plate in front of you. Harkara estimates calories and macros for every dish on every partner menu, from the dish's name, description and listed ingredients against standard-serving references. That gives us something no table has: 836 real food dishes from eleven Jaipur restaurants, priced and on sale today, each with an estimate. Here is what they say.

The typical dish

The median food dish, leaving out drinks and add-ons, is 462 kcal. Half of all dishes fall between 346 and 562 kcal. The lightest food on any menu is 64 kcal (a ginger, honey and lemon warmer at Ciro Co, which is a drink by any sensible reading but sits in its food section); the heaviest is 1,148 kcal, Nuroh's mezze platter, which is meant for a table.

Measure Calories
Median dish 462 kcal
Lower quarter ends at 346 kcal
Upper quarter starts at 562 kcal
Dishes under 300 kcal 140 of 836
Dishes under 500 kcal 499 of 836
Dishes at 800 kcal or more 17 of 836
Dishes at 1,000 kcal or more 1

Restrict it to mains, the dishes priced at ₹250 or more, and the median rises only to 478 kcal. These are cafe and casual-dining menus: bowls, pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, salads, mezze. A thali house or a biryani counter would run heavier; we do not have one on Harkara yet, so we do not guess.

A meal, not a dish

Few people eat one dish. A main at the median plus a dessert at the dessert median (54 desserts, median 456 kcal) comes to about 920 kcal. A main with a side or a starter shared two ways lands near 700. A main with a 300 kcal coffee drink is about 760. The number people quote for "a restaurant meal" in the West, 1,000 to 1,200 kcal, is reachable here only with a dessert and a milky drink on top, or with one of the seventeen plates at 800 kcal and above.

The heaviest plates

Dish Kitchen Calories Price
Mezze Platter Nuroh 1,148 kcal ₹899
Burrata Pizza Ciro Co 932 kcal ₹945
House Hummus Plate Ciro Co 884 kcal ₹699
Truffle Cacio e Pepe Pizza Ciro Co 872 kcal ₹899
Florentine Enchiladas Ciro Co 846 kcal ₹649

Every one of these is a plate built to share, a whole pizza, or a cheese-led main. None is a trick; a mezze platter for two at 1,148 kcal is 574 each.

Kitchen by kitchen

The typical dish differs more between kitchens than people expect. Stack'D, a sandwich counter, has the lightest median; Ciro Co, with pizzas and cheese-forward mains, the heaviest.

Kitchen Food dishes Median dish
Stack'D 6 280 kcal
Nuroh 121 410 kcal
Midori, The Zen Bar 110 424 kcal
Cafe LazyMojo 296 438 kcal
Tap The Roots 55 456 kcal
Oree Coffee & Kitchen 83 484 kcal
Green Feast, Raja Park 9 490 kcal
Red Coal 45 494 kcal
Green Feast, C-Scheme 16 500 kcal
Ratio 19 539 kcal
Ciro Co 114 556 kcal

The median protein across the same 836 dishes is 14 g, which is why the high-protein guide exists: the dishes at 20 g and above are the minority, and worth knowing by name.

If you want to stay under 500

499 of the 836 dishes do, and the under-500-calories guide lists them live, most protein first, with prices, so a light plate is also a filling one. That is the use of a number on a menu: not a verdict, a choice made with open eyes.

Where the numbers come from

Calories and protein are Harkara's estimates per serving, worked out from each dish's name, description and listed ingredients against standard-serving references; they are not lab values, and portions vary. Drinks and add-ons (dressings, dips, extra shots) are left out of the 836. Read from the live menus of the eleven kitchens on 18 October 2026; the live guides update hourly.
